The Peterborough Police Service is investigating two hate crimes after derogatory and hateful graffiti was spray painted on the exterior of two local high schools.
Sometime between 10 p.m. on June 5, 2020 and 6 a.m. on June 6, 2020 graffiti, including hateful symbols and derogatory phrases, were spray painted on the exterior walls of a Monaghan Road high school.
On June 6, 2020 police were also contacted regarding similar graffiti spray painted on the exterior of an Armour Road high school. The time frame in which the property was damaged is unknown.
These incidents have both been deemed hate crimes.
The Peterborough Police Service continues to track both hate crimes as well as hate incidents, incidents that may not meet the criminal threshold for charges but could support stronger sentencing down the road.
We encourage the public to report both hate crimes and hate incidents to us and we will continue to work with our partners to ensure our communities are safe places where everyone feels welcome.
